Spring means the trees are blooming, the temperatures are getting warmer and the days are getting longer. For drivers, it can also mean a new set of hazards to be on the lookout for. We know you’re wanting to roll down the windows and get out to enjoy the spring breezes, but these are all some things you might want to be aware of:

Rain and flooding – Spring can mean sudden storms that can get quite intense and result in flash floods. You need to make sure your car’s ready, with a good set of tires and fresh wiper blades, and make sure that all your headlights and taillights are working. Whatever you do, don’t try to drive through flood waters! Just a few inches of running water can be enough to push a vehicle off the road and downstream.

Hailstorms – A thunderstorm can unexpectedly grow into a hailstorm, if only for a minute or two, and even marble-sized hail can damage your car’s finish or crack a windshield. If you find yourself caught in a sudden hailstorm, your best bet is to find an overpass that you can park under to wait it out.

Animals – Spring is mating season for a lot of wild animals, meaning that they suddenly become a lot more active. If you see deer by the side of the road, be alert and ready to react – they can become pretty unpredictable this time of year, bounding across the road at the last second or even ramming headlong into a passing vehicle.

Wear and tear from winter – Snow plows, salt, sand and the freeze/thaw of winter can result in potholes and other problems with pavement. Be alert for road hazards like potholes, and for construction crews that are assigned to repair them.

Bicycles and joggers – Everyone wants to get out and enjoy spring weather, including runners and bicyclists. Keep an eye out for them, drive friendly and give them plenty of room!

Remember to check your tire pressure, inspect your tires carefully, make sure your headlights and wipers are in good shape…and more importantly, slow down and be aware of potential hazards during the springtime months.
